Ladies Night
The next time I complain about being single. Can someone please remind me of this post.

Last Friday started out very typical. I cough cough slept through cough cough my one class, woke up at 3 for Dr.Phil (calm down people, this class doesn't have an attendance policy and I'm doing well in it!). Then I answered some emails to make plans for the night.

I decided to hang out with my friend Christina. Christina is the definition of fun. I mean she could flirt with a wall (and get it to buy her a drink!). So we met at her place, gathered a group of friends and went to a frat party.

I am officially getting old. Frat parties have become boring to me. Sloppy drunk boys and slutty freshman girls in short skirts (not to mention cheap beer!) no longer interest men. So we quickly hightailed it to a local bar.

And then the night got interesting.

My friends and I have no shame when it comes to '80s music. If a good song comes on, we will belt it out (using beer bottles as microphones!). So while we did our rendition of Papa Don't Preach at the bar--we noticed two really cute guys (with the bluest eyes!) looking our way.

And then Christina did her thing--and soon was eating some of their food! We all started talking to each other. They had overheard my pity party about having only gay guy friends and how that doesn't help in the dating department (ya think?!). And then they mentioned they were gay. The cutest guys in the bar were gay. Story of my life.

After they left we pretty much figured this was a girl's night out, until one guy came up and I thought he knew Christina. I mean he was 'all up on us'. But we didn't know him! And he was drunk and scary and spilled Guinness over my friend's boots. And the bad thing was he wasn't the worst of the night.

After the Guinness guy came Mr. Old Guy. He had to be 40 and the best pick up line was my paralegal's name is Renee. Ok great. And here's a tip Mr.Old Guy-- just don't dance to Kanye West. It's not really your gift!

And that was our night. I am no longer searching for a guy. He will come when he comes. For now, I'm just going to have fun my friends and enjoy life. Because with or without a guy---that's what it's all about.

My favorite quote:

Every year I always wish for the same thing - a boyfriend. Someone to love who'll love me. This year I think I'm gonna wish for something else. The wisdom and maturity to realize that I won't find what I want by looking for it. Not expect someone else to give me what I never gave myself. That I'm not a half waiting to be made a whole. And even if that special person never comes along...
I'll be just fine.

New Project: Frugal Book Reviews
I've decided to start a new project. I'm going to review several of the popular frugal books. I will evaluate the books on the following criteria:

  • Originality-Do the books offer new or creative advice? Or, is it just repeating the same old thing.
  • Flexibility- How easy is it for a single person to adjust the recipes, etc given in the book to fit their needs.
  • Worth it- Is the book worth purchasing or even worth your time reading it?

And because I've always wanted to Siskel and Ebert, I will rate the books on a scale of 1 coupon-4 coupons. 1 being the worst and 4 being the best.

Books I plan on reviewing:

  • Not Just Beans (older version of Living on a Dime)
  • Tightwad Gazette (probably the complete one)
  • Miserly Moms
  • Shop, Save and Share

Any one have any other book suggestions?

Freebie Birthday Links
I LOVE birthdays. It doesn't even have to be my birthday. I just LOVE birthdays! I also love how you can get tons of free stuff from companies just for your birthday. There are tons of birthday clubs available, but this list (which will be updated continuously) features companies that I've actually received stuff from:

Cold Stone Creamery--> Sign up for their birthday club and receive a free ice cream on your birthday (no age restrictions).

Chuckie Cheese--> Join their e-club and receive coupons for free tokens on your child's birthday. I'm pretty sure if you go to Chuckie Cheese on your child's birthday you get a free balloon and maybe some tokens?

Toys R Us--> Sign up for their birthday club and receive special coupons and a 'birthday experience' on your child's birthday (ages 2-10 only). My niece belongs to this club and I believe we got a very nice coupon on her birthday.

Baskin Robbins--> Join their birthday club and get a free scoop of ice cream on your birthday.

The Children's Place-->They send you something on YOUR birthday and YOUR child's birthday.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving by myself has been fine! I slept in and then I hung around the house and decided to go to the movies. I saw No Country for Old Men which was fantastic. It was unbelievably violent, but it actually had a plot.

I don't go to the movies a lot. It's so expensive. But I went to the matinée ($5.50) and avoided the concession stand (I ate lunch right before). So it was a cheap treat!!

I am so excited for Black Friday tomorrow. There's only three things I need to get at Toys R Us. One thing for my niece and two things for my angel tree kid.

I LOVE Black Friday. You know those crazy people who will knock you down? I have a list, a plan and I'm not playin'!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey for one
This has been the year of single for me.

However, I have grown a lot because of my lack of dates this year. I went on vacation by myself, overcame my fear of dining alone by myself and now I'm about to tackle the biggie: a holiday by myself.

Due to the prohibitive cost of gas and exams that are coming way to fast, I've decided to stay in my house this Thanksgiving and not go home.

I have never spent a holiday away from my family so this will be totally new for me. I plan on splurging on a chinese dinner (sesame chicken YUM) and watching some British comedies.

When I compare the cost of a $10 dinner to $60 in gas (roundtrip), I can justify my dinner out!

Cold
I live down south, and it gets hot. Really hot. So despite the fact that I have always lived down south, I tend to forget that it can also get really cold.

My roommates and I haven't gotten oil yet for our house and are trying to 'rough' it and see how long we can last before calling someone.

Here's how I've stayed warm so far (freezing temperatures included):
Keep myself dressed- I wear leggings, a longsleeve T and an undershirt to bed at night. I also wear socks.

Changed my linens- I got a set of flannel sheets from Target and am using a down-alternative comforter and another heavier comforter.

Heater-- I have a medium sized energy-friendly heater that I use in my room when I do my homework or read before going to bed. With my door closed it heats my room up pretty fast! The heater also automatically shuts off after 4 hours and should it fall over it will shut off, so it's very safe.

Slippers- I have a pair of down slippers from Restoration hardware and they keep me SO warm. I love them.

Tea- I drink hot chocolate and hot tea a lot.

Water- we also leave our outside spicket drizzling when its supposed to freeze at night, to maintain our pipes.

I know eventually we will have to call to replace the oil, but right now it's fun to see how low we can go!

Christmas Christmas Time is (nearly) Here
I LOVE Christmas.

And by love I mean, I would marry it and have tons of babies if I could.

But I can't so I prepare and and plan as early as possible. I do this not only because I love the Holidays so much, but also because I am on a tight student budget and have to plan ahead to buy gifts, decorations, etc.

I buy items throughout the year, but my general timeline is as follows:
July--> Make gift lists, start to buy items (especially toys when Target has their great toy sale towards the end of the summer).
August-September-->Hit yardsales to find decoration items (this year I scored a large outdoor snowman for my front yard!)
October-->I start to look for black friday deals for the one or two big ticket items I need to buy
November-December--> I wrap my items, double check my list and hit Dollar tree for stocking stuffers (more on my Dollar Tree loot in another post).

How do you prepare for Christmas?
